Cologne Opera: World-Class Music Theatre in the Heart of the City
Cologne Opera stands for powerful voices, compelling stories and outstanding musical discoveries. Under the artistic direction of General Manager Hein Mulders, the programme has combined the traditions of the operatic repertoire with contemporary music theatre, major international premieres and innovative productions since the 2022/23 season.
Together with the Gürzenich Orchestra and a renowned ensemble, Cologne Opera brings works from several centuries to the stage. International guest artists, emerging talents from the Opera Studio and partnerships with leading opera houses and festivals across Europe give the programme a truly international profile – right here in Cologne.
Younger audiences also have plenty to discover. Throughout the season, Cologne Children’s Opera introduces young visitors to the world of music theatre with productions designed to spark curiosity and inspire a lasting interest in opera.
Since the opening of its original venue at Offenbachplatz in 1957, Cologne Opera has repeatedly set important artistic standards. Landmark productions, influential new interpretations and world premieres – including Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s “Die Soldaten” and works by internationally acclaimed contemporary composers – have helped establish Cologne as a major centre for music theatre.
During the renovation of the opera house, the Staatenhaus in Cologne-Deutz served as the company’s temporary home. It provided the setting for outstanding productions such as “Les Troyens”, “Die Frau ohne Schatten”, “Der Zwerg” and the new “Ring Cycle”.
In September 2026, Cologne Opera returns to Offenbachplatz. With the reopening of the renovated theatres, a new chapter begins – and Cologne regains one of its most important venues for opera, music theatre and cultural exchange.
