It was a birthday party for the singer and actress Georgette Leblanc.
They all came: Oscar Wilde, Stéphane Mallarmé, Claude Debussy, Sarah
Bernhardt, and of course Maurice Maeterlinck, with whom she has been
in a relationship for some time. The successful playwright and poet gifts
her his new play The Blue Bird, which comes to life in her dreams. Thus, the
sibling pair Mytyl and Tyltyl embark on adventurous paths in a parallel
art world. Equipped with supernatural powers by the fairy Berylune, the
two travel to the land of the past, the night, happiness, and the future...
They are unable to locate the blue bird, despite their best efforts. Is this an
allegory for the pursuit of happiness? Ballet director Sabrina Sadowska
has used the fairytale play by the Belgian Nobel laureate in literature as
an opportunity to highlight the significant women who supported him.
Leblanc was Maeterlinck's eternal muse – she inspired him, dedicating
her entire life to his brilliance. He married someone else.
